A Cultural Planning App

Native Empire worked with The Australian to develop the Culture Calendar – a web application that helps people find events they’re interested in and to plan their calendars and share event details with their friends. We took the brief from the client and translated this into a design to meet their branding needs, then developed the tool to work across desktops, mobiles and tablets. The Culture Calendar enables the content team at The Australian to add events to the cultural calendar and include a description of the event, a link to the event website and a link through to the location of the event in Google Maps. The application also provides tools to allow people to download a calendar reminder that alerts them when the event is about to start and lets them share the details of the event across Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and email.

Outcomes

The Culture Calendar has been embedded into the Arts section of The Australian website and is used to engage the audience and provide them with a useful tool to plan their cultural events while their at work, home or out and about on their mobiles. The Culture Calendar lists a variety of event types across a range of interest such as Wicked, Vivid, the National Photographic Portrait Prize, Les Miserables and many more.

Some of the key outcomes for the project include:

  • Inclusion into the Arts section for The Australian website, reaching a national audience.
  • Rich inventory of cultural experiences included in the calendar.
  • Tools to help add events to people’s devices, accessible across all devices.
  • Social sharing tools to help people plan with friends.

Device Responsive Web Application

We’ve developed a web app that works on all devices, to help people plan their cultural activities, when they’re at home, work or out and about on their mobiles.

Design & Branding

We’ve worked with the branding and design teams at The Australian to build a site that matches the look and feel of the brand and enables the site to be neatly embedded into the suite of web content in the main site.

Custom Web Application

Our team defined and built a custom web application to provide The Australian the tools to create a content rich site and to give their readers tools to plan and share the events they’re interested in.

Social Sharing

We developed tools to let people share the events that they wish to experience across Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and email, across all their devices.
